About Otitis Externa

Patients with infection of the ear canal usually experience pain and discharge from the ear. If treated early, mild infections may resolve with antibiotic ear drops. However, more severe infections, especially fungal infections, require a thorough cleaning of the ear to remove infective elements and inflammatory debris. While most patients recover well, patients with impairment of the immune system are at risk of the infection spreading to the bone of the ear (“malignant” otitis externa”) which is difficult to cure and can be life-threatening
