About Serum IgE Testing

In allergic rhinitis, your immune system has elevated levels of specific antibodies (immunoglobulin E or IgE)  to the substance that you are allergic to. This can be measured from a blood (serum) sample.

While skin prick testing (SPT) more closely correlates with symptoms in allergic rhinitis, measurements of serum IgE can be useful for those who cannot undergo skin tests. In addition, while SPT may help diagnose food allergies, the diagnosis of food allergies can be complex and your doctor may suggest serum IgE testing to help to identify food allergies.
