Microscopic Examination Of The Ear & Microscopic Clearance
When Do I Need a Microscopic Examination & Microscopic Clearance?
Microscopic examination and clearance of the ear is generally performed to:
-
Treat a middle ear infection
-
Remove foreign bodies or objects such as beads, small toys and cotton swabs
-
Treat impacted earwax
Microscopic examination of the ear is also a default diagnostic test for any ear treatment procedure as it is the only method to precisely and clearly inspect the ear.
What Is Microscopic Examination of the Ear & Microscopic Clearance?
Microscopic examination of the ear is a diagnostic test to inspect the ear canals using an otoscope, a special lighted equipment with a magnifier.
Microscopic clearance is the general term used to describe the cleaning of the ear canal under direct vision using an otoscope. An otoscope allows the doctor to clearly see into the ear and safely use instruments such as low-pressure suctions to clear the ear canal. Common substances cleaned during microscopic clearance include middle ear fluids, earwax or foreign bodies.
Possible Risks & Complications
There is minimal risk associated with microscopic examination of the ear and microscopic clearance.
However, there may be rare complications such as:
-
Mild discomfort
-
Bleeding from the ear canal
-
Dizziness

What Happens During a Microscopic Ear Examination & Microscopic Clearance?
During a typical microscopic ear examination, an otoscope will be inserted into the ear canals to examine the ear structures, particularly the eardrums and middle ear. Anaesthesia is generally not required as it is a quick and painless process, although some people may experience mild pain, especially if they have an ear infection.
Microscopic clearance will then be carried out if there is an impacted earwax, a middle ear infection indicated by accumulation of pus or blood or a foreign object stuck in the ear canal.
The ear can be cleaned by:
- Wiping with miniature cotton tips
- Sweeping with wax rings, hooks or curettes
- Using miniature forceps or tweezers
- Suction
