Ascent Ear Nose & Throat
Tympanometry Specialist In Singapore
Tympanometry can help diagnose ear conditions by measuring the movement of your tympanic membrane in response to changes in pressure.
Why & When Do I Need Tympanometry?
Tympanometry can help diagnose ear conditions by measuring the movement of your tympanic membrane in response to changes in pressure. The tympanic membrane is a thin tissue that separates the middle and outer ear.
Tympanometry is typically performed to test for conditions such as:
-
Hearing loss
-
Fluid in your middle ear
-
Middle ear infection (Otitis media)
-
Perforation of the tympanic membrane (Hole in the ear)
-
Problems with the eustachian tube, which connects the upper part of the throat and nose to the middle ear
What Is Tympanometry?
Tympanometry is a diagnostic test that is usually performed along with a physical examination to monitor and determine problems in the middle ear using air pressure in the ear canals. The eardrum’s response to changes in air pressure within the ear canal will then be charted into a graph called a tympanogram.
What To Expect Afterwards?
Tympanometry is one of the many diagnostic tests for ear conditions. Other tests and examinations may be necessary to confirm a diagnosis or eliminate causes. If the results from tympanometry are constantly abnormal, additional testing may be required.

What Happens During Tympanometry?
First, your doctor will perform an ear examination using an otoscope, which is a lighted instrument with a magnifier. This helps to check if your ear canal is clear and there is no hole in the eardrum. Additionally, this ear examination can also check if there is earwax or foreign objects obstructing the ear canal.
Next, a tympanometer will be placed into the ear canal. This device changes the air pressure in the ear, generating a pure tone that detects the eardrum’s response to sounds under different pressures. The results will then be recorded in a tympanogram.
You will not be able to move, speak, or swallow during the test as doing so might lead to inaccurate results.
