Vertigo Treatment In Singapore

When Do I Need Intratympanic Injections?

Intratympanic injections are recommended if you experience:

  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Giddiness and vertigo
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Intratympanic injections are also typically used as an extended treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), also known as sudden hearing loss, to avoid potential complications and side effects of prolonged use of oral corticosteroid tablets during the initial stage of treatment.
OVERVIEW

What Is an Intratympanic Injection?

An intratympanic injection is a procedure where a medication, typically a corticosteroid, is injected directly into the middle ear, where it is slowly absorbed by the inner ear. This procedure is used to treat various ear conditions such as sudden hearing loss, vertigo, and Meniere’s disease (an inner ear disorder caused by abnormal inner ear fluid pressure).

What Happens During an Intratympanic Injection?

Your doctor will first examine your ear canals using a special lighted instrument with a magnifier called an otoscope. Afterwards, they will clean your ear canals and apply topical anaesthetic cream on your eardrums before inserting a fine needle through the eardrum. Your middle ear cavity will then be filled with corticosteroid medication. You might experience mild pressure and discomfort during the procedure.

Once the injection has been administered, you will be advised to remain in a lying position for about 30 minutes to allow the corticosteroid to diffuse into the inner ear.

What To Expect Afterwards?
