When Do I Need Myringoplasty?

Myringoplasty is generally recommended to restore hearing loss by repairing the damaged hole, allowing the eardrum to vibrate and transmit sounds to the rest of the ear.

Furthermore, myringoplasty can also prevent recurrent ear infections, which can result in further complications if left untreated.

OVERVIEW

What Is Myringoplasty?

Myringoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair holes in the eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation) by placing a graft made of either a small piece of tissue from another body part or a gel-like material.

A hole in the eardrum or tympanic membrane perforation is a rupture in the eardrum due to causes such as an infection or direct head and eardrum trauma. The tympanic membrane or eardrum is a thin sheet of tissue that separates the external ear from the middle ear.

Possible Risks & Complications

As with any other surgical procedure, there are always side effects observed, including:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Frequent ear drainage
  • Hearing loss
  • Ringing in the ear (Tinnitus)
  • Injury to ear structures other than the eardrum

What Happens During Myringoplasty?

Before the surgery, you may likely be required to fast for at least eight hours before the procedure or as advised by your doctor. You may also be asked to stop taking certain medications up to a week before the surgery, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and blood thinners, to reduce surgical complications.

During the surgery, your  ENT doctor in Singapore will administer a general anaesthetic before making an incision either in the front of or behind the ear to harvest tissues to be used as graft material. The tissue graft will then be used to seal up the hole in the eardrum. Afterwards, the incision will be closed with sutures, and the external ear canal may be packed with soft sponge-like gel foam.

After the procedure is complete, you will be brought to a recovery room, where your vital signs will be observed while your anaesthetic slowly wears off.

What To Expect Afterwards?

ENT Patient In Singapore

Following myringoplasty, your doctor will likely advise you on some postoperative instructions on treatment and care during recovery, such as prescribing antibiotics and other medications to treat any infection or side effects.

Your doctor may also schedule follow-up appointments to remove any bandages or sutures used during the surgery and track your recovery progress.
